Louisa Longstaff-Scales is a landscape painter living and working in Norfolk, England. She is a graduate of Winchester School of Art where she studied fine art, painting and her work has been exhibited with the Royal Society of British Artists, The Royal Academy and is held in private collections across the UK and abroad. The paintings of Louisa Longstaff-Scales illustrate a personal narrative between the artist and the landscape, exploring the idea of landscape as a companion and confidant. As an ever present accompaniment, the landscape witnesses us in moments of solitude, sadness and joy, sharing our secrets, and striking the rhythm of our ageing. Moving through the landscape is a time for Longstaff-Scales to immerse herself in her inner world and exist as her own entity. Sometimes Longstaff-Scales’  paintings are of a specific place and moment, and sometimes they are a conglomerate of landscape,  like a dot to dot of a journey across land and memory. Through these conversations in paint, there is a reflection of the stories that we tell ourselves (steeped in tradition, memory, legacy and human behaviour)  to ease and inspire the forward step. Longstaff-Scales’ paintings are largely autobiographical  The ideas and the thoughts she has and the matters that she is trying to resolve in this space colour her paintings. She makes suggestions to these in the landscape (using painterly marks and gesture), and in the titles. These paintings and titles become like small poems which are equally rooted in the quiet charm of fleeting moments,  and a mortal response to the vast.
